History of vengalacheddikulam Divisional Secretariat
Vengalacheddikulam Divisional secretariat Division is situated in the Western boundary of Vavuniya District. The name ‘Cheddikulam’ has been called even in the 3rd century AD. In that period a businessman named ‘Veeranarayana Cheddi’ came to the village ‘Kappachi’ to give pearls as a gift to the queen ‘Alli rani’ who governed the Western part of ‘Ealam’, and he constructed a Lord siva temple called ‘Santhira eswarar’ and a pond with establishing a browns sivan statue and renovating an ancient tank by naming as ‘Cheddikulam’. Area people were impressed by his above activities and started to call the village name ‘Vengalacheddikulam’ after his death.
When establishing the administrative structure of Divisional Revenue Officer(DRO) in 1963, this created with 5 Grama Officer’s Divisions and then it was upgraded 20 Grama Officer’s Division’s and changed the administrative structure as Assistant Government Agent(AGA). After that, it was upgraded as a Divisional Secretariat Division in 1992 and continues up to now.
